Zoo Planting (RHS Article)
Old 28-10-2008

Hi All,

I'm a member of the Royal Horticultural Society and in their magazine this month was an article about plants at London Zoo. Very interesting.

i had a bit of a chuckle reading this article. i am a huge fan of london zoo, but as an australian i have to say the UK approach to zoo gardening is so different to australia.im guessing it has less to do with climate and more to do with resources, as gardens such as Kew have demonstrated for many years that alot of sub-tropical plants or tropical simulators can be grown in the UK easily, and yet zoos seem to have only grasped this concept recently.
how many zoos in the UK have horticulture depts? and how well staffed are they?

I'm acquainted with a number of horticulturists at British zoos and at Australian zoos. And some know each other. I think horticulture as a discipline may be different in those countries, but in both there are zoos that value landscaping and others that don't. Perhaps (my guess only) more British zoos feel they must have garden-y grounds.
