male cloven-feathered dove (Drepanoptila holosericea)
an endemic pigeon that is still locally-common in forests but declining due to hunting. This is one of my favourite New Caledonian birds. It has a very oddly-shaped head, beautiful colouration, and bizarre white puffs of feathers on its legs which make a wierd noise when it flies. They are quite difficult to see in the wild because they blend in so well to the canopy where they live, but they can be heard quite readily as they produce their monotonous oow oow oow like miniature green foghorns in the trees :D August 2010.
