      Chinese Gorals.

      oh, I missed these! :(
(Question for Zooish) - are these still at the zoo?
    • Zooish
      They're off-exhibit now :)

This enclosure is now the Proboscis Monkey bachelor exhibit.

I don't know what the plan is for the Gorals in Singapore. They were originally brought in for Night Safari in the nineties but have never been displayed there. They were put on display at the Zoo in 2008 at an old Barbary Sheep exhibit (sheep were phased out), but were taken off display again when the enclosure was redeveloped into the Proboscis Monkey exhibit in 2009.

I was there in September 2009 - I must have been just a bit too late to have seen them on display :( . They are really nice looking animals.

do you know if the gorals are still there now Zooish? And if so will they perhaps be displayed in or around the giant panda complex when it opens? They would fit the theme perfectly!
    • Zooish
@Chlidonias: Not enough space for an enclosure big enough to house them in/around the panda complex. They've been off show all this while. No indication that they'll come back on show anytime soon.

that's a shame. I guess they must be quite old now though, if they first got them in the 90s.

btw, they are now listed as Himalayan Goral (N.goral) on ISIS, as oppose to the previous Long-tailed Goral (N.caudatus). Possibly headed for phase out.

If they are brought from China, they are indeed Chinese goral; as almost all the "grey" gorals in Chinese zoos are this species; the long-tailed gorals are restricted in northeast China and rarely kept in Chinese zoos; the Himalaya gorals are distributed along the Himalaya and never be kept in Chinese zoos.

Lovely species. Could be reconsidered for a refurbished Himalayan/Altai steppe zone, once the gradual conversion of species to the Rainforest Park is complete.

Other Asian caprines the dept could consider are serows and takins. In the long-term future, perhaps rarer highland species like Saola too! ;)
