If anyone can work out why this gorilla house was designed to look like this, let me know.

Hideous architecture, with no redeeming feature at all. Although I suppose it may have been cheap, and quick to build.

I think you may have found the reasons there. The only other factor I think is simply habit - this is how Twycross has built ape houses for years.

It's slightly odd that after a number of years and millions of pounds of investment, we still have no idea how the new management would build a primate exhibit, as they've yet to build any.

You can indeed - he was out for a brief trot about but soon disappeared.
