Northern White Rhinoceros at Dvur Kralove, 27/08/12

Ceratotherium simum cottoni The single female Nabire, last individual in Europe (housed with a single male Southern White). My third time seeing this taxon and sadly could well be my last. Even sadder, having seen the Dvur group before the shipment back to Africa, as well as the San Diego pair, I\'ve seen every confirmed living individual of Ceratotherium simum cottoni.

A weekend article in the 'Telegraph magazine ' suggests that there might still be some wild Northern whites in South Sudan , not heard this before .
    • Maguari
I'd not heard that either - would be fantastic if it proves true.

A great species, does anybody know how old this specimen is? Hope she sticks around for a few for more years. :D

She's a few months from turning 20 - the last three to die at Dvur were 39, 33 and 31 at the time of their deaths, so she *might* hang on a little longer - but I would not depend on this.

The two remaining in San Diego are in their 30s. If anybody here wants to see a northern white rhino get to Dvur Kralove or the San Diego Safari Park soon.:(

Indeed - considering the age of the SDSP animals, barring illness or accident this photo *will* be of the last captive Northern White Rhino. If the protection around the reintroduced four fails, this photo could even be of the last NWR full stop. :(

Both collections are on my to-visit list; but I fear I will get to neither in time.

Yes - Nabire could have another 10 or even 20 years ahead of her, but it would only take one bad injury or infection and that could be cut very short - I really wouldn't hang about if you want to see her, or her Californian cousins.

Thanks :) - yup, it's also on my 'to do' list but I also fear with TLD that I may not get to Dvur Kralove in time. It looks a great collection and not just for Mammals, the bird list is also quite impressive.

Quite; hence "barring illness or accident".

One thing is for sure - they're going to be extinct within the next decade or two.
