Thank you for this photo. It really does look like a banded mongoose, only without the "bands". Do you know the history of this animal (am I right in saying it's just one that they have?). I'm presuming it was imported from the wild.
The sheer, mind-numbing addiction of UK collections to Meerkats has served to obscure that Herpestidae is a large and very diverse family of carnivores. It's a great pity that so few species are kept.
They have a small group (4 or 5 individuals I believe) - there were certainly multiple mongooses when I was there in 2010.
Yesterday, when I was in the zoo, I could see 4 animals. I don't know where from they come. Most probably of the live catching in kind.
