Pygmy Hippos Chester Zoo 25 August 1975

Max and Phyllis, the Pygmy Hippos (Hexaprotodon liberiensis) at Chester Zoo in 1975. This enclosure was the outside accommodation for the hippos who also had an indoor area underneath the Nocturnal House. This site now houses the capuchin monkeys.

Wow! I would love Chester to keep these again...

I doubt visitors could get that close nowadays though ;)

      Did they breed?

      Nice picture!

      They never bred.

Its amazing how attitudes have changed over the years, look how close the public are getting to the hippos, would never happen today.

I prefer the old days, but there are so many idiotic zoo visitors nowadays who would try to put their hands in the hippos mouths and generally behave extrememly strupidly.

Take another look at my picture of the pygmy hippo enclosure at Jihlava Zoo (and partly, Dvur Kralove); the current setting is pretty much the same as the one depicted here. So if you want to get close to pygmy hippos as a visitor-come to the Czech Republic!:D

What an incredible photo...as much for the hairstyles and clothing as for the close proximity to a pair of pygmy hippos!

I love the bloke who's donned a tie for his day out at the zoo!
