Fat Sand Rat (Psammomys obesus) at Zoo Leipzig - April 7th 2014

A very appealing and unusual rodent and one of many lifeticks at Zoo Leipzig, which held a sizable group of the taxon.

Judging by the shadows and the use of a flash with this and the Elephant shrew, were these enclosures in the giraffe house darkened?
They were not on my visit earlier this month.

They weren't too dark, I just found I got better focus and contrast when using flash; those shots I took without flash tended to have trouble differentiating the sandy-coloured rock, sandy-coloured sand and sandy-coloured mammals.

One of the most unflattering names for quite a pleasant species.
