I didn't know there were any angolan giraffes in captivity - that is a real treat for Lisbon visitors.

There are also Angolan giraffes in Dortmund; I saw them there a couple of weeks ago.
    • Maguari
Indeed there are. I've only ever seen them at those two zoos but both had decent-sized herds with a mix of ages, so it looks like they'll be around for the foreseeable.

They're a nice subspecies - a very consistent sandy colour.

Amersfoort (Netherlands) also has a male Angolan Giraffe. He came from Dortmund in 2009.

i would love to see an angolan giraffe in a US zoo, but all US zoos have are reticulated, masai, and baringo, there used to be nubian giraffes at santa barbara zoo and san diego zoo but now its only baringo at santa barbara and masai at san diego. id like to see some angolan giraffes for a change

and @ arizona docent, there are angolan giraffes at the singapore zoo

Lisbon does seem to have a quite an animal like connection with its former Colony of Portuegese West Africa (or Angola)

There are no more Reticulated Giraffes in the U.S., just BaringoXReticulated hybrids that are still listed as Reticulated. So really it's only Baringo and Masai in captivity with maybe one really old pure Reticulated at Busch Gardens Tampa (I don't know if she's still alive, though). I would've loved to have seen the Nubians and I would, too, like to see some Angolan Giraffes.

Thanks Thylo, I wasnt aware that there were no pure reticulated giraffes in the US, going back to the Angolan giraffes, I found out that the Los Angeles Zoo had Angolan giraffes at one time, I am not exactly sure if Giraffe subspecies other than Baringo, Masai, Reticulated, Nubian, or Angolan have been imported into the United States, but I can find out for you
