Where Cuddles once cavorted 27th December 2012

And I thought his home at Dudley was bad.

This pool looked enormous to me at the time, but now it is hard to imagine it housing a Killer Whale, albeit a young one. Including the small rectangular area which was open to the public view in those days, but not accessible to Cuddles (the Dolphins were often confined to it when we visited), the pool did, and must still, hold 300,000 gallons of water.

      300,000?
I'm not a cetacean expert but that seems ridiculously small!
Is this the pool that was home to the short lived pilot whale and/or belugas?
    • Parrotsandrew
It was a very large pool by British standards! The Pilot Whale and Belugas (I suspect there was another, maybe ex-Cleethorpes, after Titch) were at the zoo before this pool was constructed. This pool dwarfs those in the original Dolphin House - they were tiny. There are British Pathe films that show them (sorry, I have no idea how to create a link!).

It should work if you copy and paste the pages web address into your post.
    • Parrotsandrew
That sounds difficult! I know how to copy and paste when word processing or using a spreadsheet, but......? I do remember typing a website address at work once and it turned blue, so I may try that. I do know that searching the Pathe site for Flamingo Park Zoo will not turn up the film of bottle-feeding the Pilot Whale as I think that film is called "Children's Zoo". I'll go away and investigate.

I have now just watched the two films. The Pilot Whale one goes on to show Dolphins as well and you can see just how small the pools were. I have written down the website addresses which are as follows (will they turn blue?):

      DOLPHINS DELIGHT - British Path

OUT TAKES / CUTS FROM CP 618 - reel 2 of 2 - CHILDREN'S ZOO and FIBRE GLASS MENAGERIE - British Path

Well they have not turned blue! I presume the query bit is added because I searched for them, so theses are not the actual addresses. Oh well, that's where they are.

Ooh, they just turned blue and changed when I clicked the "post" icon.

Just remembered, there is a British Pathe film of Cuddles as well of course. This was taken soon after he had arrived and when he was thought to be female.
