As usual he was sleeping but the person next to me had a bird i.d. app and played a Barn Owl call. He immediately opened his eyes and looked toward us. He made some twittering sounds and went back to sleep.

That must've been pretty neat to see, although I wonder how the Keepers would feel about that. It could, in a way, be considered as interacting negatively with the animals, although I doubt that's the case.

Fantastic photo of him. Is he missing his left wing? Or is it just tucked up higher than the right?

I don't know. So far he has been asleep whenever I see him except for about one minute the other day. It does seem odd, but maybe that is why he is in captivity.

Usually the North America birds are injured and deemed unable to survive in the wild so that's exactly what I was thinking. We will just have to wait and see if he is injured.

Not good visitor practice in the slightest :(

Finally remembered to ask and found he is missing part of his left wing. Keepers do not know his history.
