Wow, this grotto doesn't even have substrate. Generally in grottoes like this the big brown bears pace all day long with the occasional swim. I know this from watching Cleveland's Grizzly bears who are in an exhibit with no substrate and a small pool.

The zoo is planning on building new exhibits for both the polar and grizzly bears.

The new exhibits should be opening in 2009, and hopefully are much more naturalistic than the ancient grotto in the photo.

What I donīt understand is why zoos who still have these horrible exhibits, just donīt use the obvious option to improve them - if ever so slightly. Simply, everyday shove in some natural substrates with for instance food items hidden in them. One or two big heaps of gravel with a few interesting things for the bears to look for. Would keep them interested at least for a while and would be such a simple thing to do.

Dan that's a rather sweeping statement about enrichment in zoos. Perhaps this zoo does provide that stuff, yet it is not seen in the photo...

Anyone who read the thread Snowleopard's Epic Road Trip will comprehend how much disdain I have for the god-awful grottoes that can still be found at countless zoos. Hopefully enrichment is utilized in those types of enclosures, because the alternative is unthinkable. The bears and big cats that are commonly found in such pits would be bored out of their minds.
