Cincinnati Zoo - Gorilla Exhibit

July 2008. Disappointing habitat that looks nice from this photo but is actually much smaller than it appears. The long, rectangular-shaped enclosure holds at least 6-7 gorillas.

It sort of looks like a Gorilla grotto. Yikes!

I found more than half of the enclosures at the Cincinnati Zoo disappointing, even though that zoo has a fabulous animal collection.

Gorilla World was one of the best gorilla exhibits when it was built (late 70's, methinks). There were plans to renovate it but I'm not sure where that is on the list of priorities.

If you think this is bad, you should have seen the old ape house. It was absolutely brutal. It's a little gift shop down the hill from Rhino Reserve right now. They used to keep Orangs, Gorlillas and Bonobos in there along with some marmosets and even a couple of Doucs at one point in the 80's. Terrible, trust me.

Keep in mind how small the zoo is.
If Cincinnati were to build a gorilla exhibit the size of the one at the Bronx Zoo, that one exhibit would eat up 10% of the Cincinnati Zoo's land.

      Very true.

Also keep in mind that before Congo, the Bronx didn't exactly have the prettiest of gorilla exhibits either.

This "ape grotto" was built at around the same time as Woodland Park Zoo's gorilla exhibits, and it is obvious which habitats have stood the test of time. This Cincinnati Zoo enclosure, while outdated, reminds me of the larger gorilla exhibit at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

      That water moat looks lethal!

Gorillas have gone down there to give birth on occasion. The water is very shallow

Ah that makes more sense, thanks :)
