I have never seen (nor even seen a picture of) a gorilla using this outdoor exhibit. In fact all of the apes in this building clearly prefer their indoor environments to the outdoor enclosures (they are given free access to either except during very cold periods). The lack of shade and the perceived security of a "canopy" provided by the indoors is part of it--air conditioning is another! I'm not overly impressed by this complex, though the animals and staff seem to really like it.

It's an interesting fact that gorillas often appear to prefer some type of cover over their heads, and yet I've visited so many zoos that have "gorilla groves" or "gorilla meadows" that are barren acre plots with a couple of trees. Pittsburgh and the National Zoo in Washington D.C. both have fairly sterile outdoor paddocks without any sort of coverage for their great apes. Maybe that's why Howletts in England is so highly regarded by many researchers, as it isn't a beautiful enclosure but surely does the job for its inhabitants.

This whole complex seems extremely impressive. Probably the 3rd best Gorilla exhibit in the U.S.
