After i visited Belfast zoo with a friend we went to dublin. I must say that although the collection in belfast is "better", i liked dulbin zoo better. Especially the old buildings on the top.

I liked the savanna the least. Great enclosures for the animals, but to me kinda boring. The field for the giraffes is enormous and because you can't walk around it there is the chance you can only the the animals from great distance (i always hate that in burgers/arnhem as well). It might have been nice if they had put the rhinos in there as well, there is plenty of space.
In the giraffehouse there was a newborn walking around between some keepers. All the adult giraffes were outside so i assume it was being handreared.

The elefantenclosure on the other hand looks superb. Beautiful riverbed, nice house etc. Also fun for me to see the 3 ex-rotterdam animals, as that is my "home-zoo".

But the most wonderful thing i saw in the zoo was in the childrens zoo. They had a theatre were kids could see how cows are milked! A great idea to teach citykids about countrylife.

They paln to mix the rhinos in the savanah in the next year or so. when this happens the current rhino paddock will turn into a new home for the zoo's group of gorillas!

Here are what I know for the future plans for Dublin zoo gorillas being moved to old white rhino enclosure, Okapis going to old african lion enclosure, bird house proposed to being turned into an aquarium but could be unlikely as its an old and protected building, If goes ahead the crocs are going here, Reptile house being focussed on asian species, Aviaries going up for mollucan cockatoos, Was told something about an island and a walkway that will connect the orangs to this, Asian lions going into old polar bear enclosure. A breeding siberian tiger male is to be obtained. Thats what I was told but I dont know what will be going ahead with

Great to hear the zoo is moving into the asiatic lions. How old is their current african lioness anyway? I thought the zoo already had a breeding amur tiger, as they had cubs a few years ago? Died or given the snip?

The male Siberian in fixed. Dont know the age of the female african lion but she is old and does not have too long left. I like the idea of the orangs climbing on a frame over the visitors heads when they are going to their island. I dont know why the gorilla enclosure gets a lot of bad publicity cos from what I see the gorillas are in a fairly cohesive family group.

I think there is a hiatus at the moment on new collections joining the EEP for okapi at the moment.
I take it the rhino are going onto the savannah enclosure with the giraffe and zebra?

Fascinating, great plans (krusty)!

Only concern: okapi are currently not being given out to new holding facilities? Perhaps a surplus male holding capacity? Do you have more inside info on what time line the okapi plans are being directed to fruition?

Was told that there was a 7 or 8 year waiting list for the okapis and dont know when they applied but that was the plan as of 3 months ago when I was up there. The hippos are being given part of the lake in the african section and the asian lions could be coming soon. They are also looking for a hen great indian hornbill and victorian crowned pigeon as well as some other species to make up pairs. The hen was the first handreared indian hornbill to reproduce. Male is an aggressive guy to me doing threat displays. Same happened to me with the trio of victoria crown pigeons in the bird hall at frankfurt. I can also vouch for the female lion at dublin. Shes old but does not like strangers in her house. When I was taken inside the house by god did she not like it. Yes the rhinos are to be mixed with the oryx, giraffe and plains zebra

As Jelle said, Okapi are at present future not being given to zoo that currently dont house them. I can't see this changing unless they have a couple of really good years of breeding. Has there been a change of policy that we have not heard of?

Am sure at the moment that there is not many spare males in the population so a suplus male holding capacity is out of the question.

If any males become spare i believe they will be held at a collection that already keeps them as there was plans for Chester to house a couple of surplus males and the potential breeding pair.
