Probably a replacement for 'Lena' when she can no longer breed and the new female 'Claudia' is mature.

That is probably true but I think its also policy nowadays to get the young handraised animals from Stuttgart into proper social groups a.s.a.p. so they learn normal behaviour. Dublin may also have been chosen for her because both their females are rearing babies so she can also watch mothering behaviour, while it also gives Dublin a better sex ratio for the future.

Any chance they will switch totally to purebred Rothschildt's giraffe before long?

Any new building plans in the offing for 2013 and beyond?

In a recent article the director said that they hope to re-develop the sea lion enclosure and robert's house along with some other small exhibits. This is good as it's a very old enclosure and needs updating to something like Bristol Zoo's standard. I would also think that the orangutan enclosure needs updating as it is also an old enclosure. They need to give them more privacy.

"We have to restore the Roberts House and find a suitable use for it, and we're not finished building here yet. I hope to invest further in a new sea lion enclosure, a really long one to enable them to swim some proper distances.

"There are other smaller enclosures to deal with. Perhaps it might take two years."

    Here's the full article:

Anybody have any clue what the "two new habitats which are both earmarked for high-profile breeding programmes" mentioned in the article are going to be?

From memory, she came to Dublin from Fota a couple of years ago after it was found she wasn't compatiable with the bull at Fota... think she was born at Fota originally but not 100% on that?

Went to the zoo today and saw the new female gorilla in the group, she is three and seems full of energy as she was playing with Kituba. Also, I saw 5 blackbucks in the elephant enclosure, all seemed female as none had horns, does anyone know where these all came from and how many the zoo actually has?

Alos, how many orangutans does the zoo house, I counted 4, but can't think of who they all are?

Couple of old bits of news from the past 12 months, picked up from Zoo Matters magazines which have now been put online: (there's quite a few, events so I've just focused on Mammals for this update)

    Arrivals
0.1 Western Chimpanzee from Leipzig (to form a pure group, with a 2nd female mentioned earlier in the thread having come from Copenhagen)
    1.0 Eastern Bongo from Berlin
0.1 Red Ruffed Lemur from Champrepus
1.0 Sulawesi Crested Macaque from Wroclaw
    0.1 Goeldis Monkey from Banham

    Departures:
1.0 Eastern Bongo to Folly Farm
1.0 White Rhino to Manor House

    Deaths:
Rothschild Giraffe calf, Tamu (born June 2012 Robin X Mauve) died in December 2012 following an unsuccessful anaesthetic. Hybrid cow, Hayley had also died in November from old age

I believe the Blackbuck came from West Midlands and have been there since the opening of the new elephant habitat. They are nervous around the elephants however so usually stay secluded in their back den.

I'm not surprised at that. They are basically desert animals and I'm not sure the two species' ranges overlap anywhere in the wild.

Dublin zoo is rapidly making its way into the list of best zoos in the world. This is fantastic news! I cannot wait to see the final result. have the plans been released to the public yet? Will there be underwater viewing?

The Orangutan Habitat is the only one that remains to be improved now.
