Right, because the warthogs were moved before this could happen. I see Ostriches, Lechwe, Wattled Cranes, Ankole-watusi, and perhaps even White Rhinos for this exhibit.
What species are currently here? Why Ankole Cattle? I do understand how cool of a domestic they are, but imo, they don't belong in an enclosure meant to display species from the wild plains of Africa. ~Thylo
Sorry for the late reply. Currently there are Grevy's Zebra, Nyala, and Lesser Kudu(only ones in U.K.) in this exhibit. I thought of Ankole Watusi because of their relative cheapness and more placid demeanor than cape buffaloes which would go better as you said but are just too aggressive. But yeah, they don't belong in an African Savannah. Come to think of it, I don't know if Edinburgh could afford most of the species I suggested.
I visited for the first time in 6 years last week and would agree that this enclosure is ridiculously big for the number of animals in there. There are also 2 large paddocks at the top of the zoo, one containing 2 rhea, the other just 3 Vicuna as far as I could see - another waste of a large open space. Given the number of species lost since my last visit and the lack of ambition regarding the former carnivore enclosures, the cost of making the African area rhino proof probably makes them an unlikely if sensible addition. Plenty of other species could be added though surely!
