Is there a significant characteristic that makes them different or is it just where they are found?

Exactly!!

Deeming a geographical sub-species to be a full species owing to genetic differences (over 40 in this case) makes life difficult since the actual differences may not be related to external appearance.

I would say that only a clouded leopard specialist may be able to tell (and maybe not even then).
