A zebra and a giraffe have replaced the orangutan who, I think, had been there for the last 17 years or so since the zoo's redevelopment.

      Is it owned by Morrisons???

Turn right for Morrisons and left for the zoo! In 1994, the zoo sold land (an overflow carpark) to Safeways, who built the supermarket and filling station now owned by Morrisons. The proceeds went towards the subsequent major redevelopment of the zoo.

Random question, would the supermarket supply the zoo with unused fruit and veg and other consumable food for the animals?

Speaking from the perspective of someone who works in a supermarket I would assume so; two years ago we had a surplus of salads after a dismal bank holiday and I got a free trip to Dudley out of it when we phoned to ask if they wanted any! :p ;)

I never really noticed this area before it became the Supermarket and car park. It must have just been a field? The original carpark for the Zoo was on the hillside above. I was never there on any day when it was crowded enough for them to use the overflow, in fact I can never remember that old carpark being even half full, or more than a handful of visitors in the Zoo in the old days.

Morrisons being so close is quite useful for buying food to eat in or after your Zoo visit and avoiding those inflated zoo prices.;)

I'm afraid I can't remember much of the layout prior to the redevelopment. I think there are some photos of old guide books in the Gallery. They may provide a clue

Judging by the bags they carry, quite a few visitors do their picnic shopping in Morrisons! Incidentally, the verticrop hydroponics greenhouse is now a picnic area.
