Lion exhibit, end of August or beginning of September 1966

One of my three memories of this, my only visit to the zoo until 1998. The others are the rear half of an elephant and the free-ranging peafowl.

Can you make out what the sign says about Born Free? I can't read the smaller print even when I expand the photo. Was one of the lions from the movie at this zoo?

This looks like a really nice lion exhibit by 1966 standards, and even 50 years later.

I cannot decipher the smaller text under "Born Free" either but can confirm that (at least) one of the lions from the film of that name was at Paignton Zoo for many years.

I think these two were Danny and Elsa. I have the postcard of them sitting under the fir tree at the top and they are named as such.

They were definately from the Movie. Ironically they sort of completed the circle- ending up in a Zoo- which Joy Adamson was so keen to prevent with the original 'Elsa'.

Yes, the sign did say the animal/s had been in the film.
