I'm extremely jealous of all the zoos you visited on this trip.
Would it be fair to say that South America have quite high standards of animal husbandry? Almost all the photo's show decent zoological collections and exhibits with some very unusual inhabitants. I really do feel sick with envy... :D

I don't think standards of animal husbandry in South America as a whole are especially high - take a look at some of the photos in the gallery from Santa Cruz in Bolivia. Just as on other continents, there are bad zoos and relatively good zoos, and the general standard varies by country (and region). I found Huachipa to be of an impressive quality - and would have been considered a good zoo even in Europe. Parque de las Leyendas, Lima's other zoo was a bit more of a mix, but I visited in 2010, before the new cat complex made a difference.

I was pretty much wheelchair-bound (temporarily) when I visited Lima, but I was really impressed by the facilities available to disabled visitors, and accessibility to most areas of both zoos was excellent, and better than in many Western zoos.

Thanks for the reply devilfish, I see what you mean about Santa Cruz but even that doesn't seem completely apalling. The jaguar enclosure looks sterile and barren, quite a contrast to the monkey island at the same zoo.
Interesting that the zoos seem to cater better for wheelchair/pushchair users than their European counterparts though.

It is difficult to generalize about an entire region or continent, but there is a enviromental awareness growing in latin america. as i mentioned on another thread staff at zoos these countries are trying to obtain the international standards, in particular of the U.S.zoos. There are still many budget limitations and outdated installations. Yet when compared to animal collections in japan, china, india, even italy, the zoos in latin america seem to be progressing more.

That's what I was trying to say, rather badly! :)
Compare the zoos to those of Soth East Asia and they seem to be miles ahead generally, obviously there are exceptions on both sides of the world but Latin America looks to be far more developed with regards to animal husbandry.
