I am now wondering who was this guy that was complaining so much about being locked on an island south east of Australia, without having any chance to see a large amount of animals......

okay, now I'm done for the year! I actually hadn't expected to get anywhere this year, but I saved and hoarded and managed a very short trip (just three weeks) - which was largely unsuccessful really ... I'll write a trip thread some time soonish.

Barely any photos unfortunately; the animals in Vietnam are not happy about seeing people for some reason, possibly to do with being shot if they sit still for too long. Most are too bad for the gallery, so I'll include them in the thread when it is written.

End of the year/start of next year, Air Asia is coming back to NZ which should mean another trip then (because airfares will be much reduced).

After a whole day of meetings in Addis Abeba I can only add one bird with certainty to my list, though it is an endemic of the region...

how many more birds are you anticipating/hoping for this year?

A good part of a 700 year in the USA must be vagrants and stragglers, yes? (Like, maybe a tenth? I don't actually know). So how close would you already be to seeing the bulk of "standard" birds for the country? Two-thirds?

According to standard numbers, there's ~675 species resident in the US. With splits and whatnot, that's gone up I'm sure. 749 is the highest ever Big Year. If I don't do any more trips out of state, right now, I could maybe add 15-20 more tops. There's a few winter birds I missed this year and a few fall migrants.

My 430 only comes from 3 states (Texas, Arizona, and California). If I could work in the Pacific Northwest, I could go a bit higher.

Note, I am only counting ABA countable species. If I used another checklist, like IOU, my count would be higher.

The list of birds you have seen by far is remarkable and even if you would not go out of your region anymore, it would still be though to beat. Even when I will spend most of the remainder of the year in Africa, but working and birding does not always combine ;)....

Currently I am at +- 300 bird and 35 mammal species, so there is still some work to do ;)
