Saigas found dead in Kazakhstan
Old 23-05-2012

Almost 550 saigas have been found dead in northern Kazakhstan:

We'll see if this is related to the Pasteurellosis epidemic which wiped out 12,000 saiga in 2010 and 400 last year.

Are there any captive breeding programs for this species? It seems the Minnesota Zoo and The Wilds would be ideal places here in the US for them.

Moscow Zoo's breeding centre has a few but numbers seem to be faltering. The Askaniya Nova reserve in Ukraine has a large number of saiga - probably the species' best hope for captive breeding, but most are kept in semi-wild conditions.
