Hillside Open Day 08/08/10
Old 11-08-2010

The former Hillside Bird Oasis, owned by the same owners as Blackbrook but no longer open to the public most of the time. It was open last weekend as part of the National Gardens Scheme. Although the bird collection is reduced from its days as a full-on small zoo, the waterfowl collection is still very interesting (including Harlequin Ducks and Hartlaub\'s Ducks) and there is a very large breeding group of Lesser Flamingos.

Do you know if birds are transferred between the two facilities very often?

And is that a magpie goose towards the back? Or perhaps a spur-winged goose?

Certainly very infrequently in the case of the flamingos as Blackbrook does not keep Lessers (there were a few on site briefly a year or two ago though). I don't know for a fact but I suspect the waterfowl switches about a bit more.

I went to this and there is indeed still waterfowl there, including my highlight of the day - King eider [Up until that point I never thought I could get so excited seeing a waterfowl species ]

JR is correct, there is still an interesting collection of waterfowl including some of the aforementioned king eider.

They also seem to breed Guinea pigs, there was certainly a large number in the shed next to the flamingos!

Old 3 Weeks Ago

Does anyone know if it is open on the 18th/19th May? The NGS website says it is. Blackbrook say they don't know when the next open days are.
