Zebra x donkey hybrid; Groombridge Place; 6th April 2012
Old 07-04-2012

According to the label, the zebra x donkey hybrid “Adam” was born in Florida on 13th June 1998.

Unfortunately the label does not state what species of zebra the parent is.

Judging by the leg patterns/stripes on the legs it looks as though it was a Damara or Burchell's Zebra. I've heard of a zeekdonk before so is this another zeedonk?

Nice photo!

Yes, it is a zeedonk.

I suspect that the zebra parent was most likely a plains zebra too.

Groombridge Place is in Kent not far from Tunbridge Wells.

It is a pleasant place to visit with attractive gardens and lovely views; there are a few animals too including birds-of-prey which feature in flying displays. However, unless you’re especially interested in zebra hybrids the animal collection is not very exciting.

(Incidentally, Arthur Conan-Doyle allegedly used Groombridge Place, renamed Birlstone Manor, as the setting for his Sherlock Holmes Story “Valley of Fear”.)
