    Edinburgh male 'Kenge' who died July 2010 came originally from Philadelphia USA but was born in San Fransisco 31.8.91. (So was 19 when he died.)

    Banham, Norfolk Owlfaced Monkeys were;

    m. Mario born Leipzig 1990. (? x Petra)
    f. Moazah born Edinburgh 1991. (Barry x Tara)
    f. name? born in wild. 1977
    f. name? born Banham 1996(?) (Mario x wildborn f.)

    Whether any of these are still alive in other zoos isn't known to me.

    Marwell also had 1.3 Owlfaced in 2000-2001.

    m. Kikwit (born Edinburgh) Sent to ZSL in 2001. sent to Antwerp 2007.
    f. Mama (from SanFransisco)
    f. Nicky (daughter of Mama, born San Fransisco)
    f. Katinka (from Philadelphia- sterile female)

    Of those at Marwell presumably only male 'Kikwit' survives, now at Antwerp.

    Notes;
    1. What happened to the male Gus/Zeus?
    2. So Twycross have had two different females(Thea/Wilma) since 2007.
    3. Veronica would have been the one monkey born in the Banham group. I did not know she was sent from there to Twycross.

    Another zoofriend told me that "Zeus" went to Amsterdam in 2004. I am weiting for reply from Amsterdam. "Gus " is just a abbreviation for "Argus".

    Oh, I see. So my guess that Gus/Zeus was one and the same animal was quite wrong!

    But I see the current Twycross pairing is still half-siblings, which is what I was told(actually that they are brother/sister, not quite correct)

    I think "Argus" at Twycross and "Kasai" (* 2003 at Leipzig) at Valencia are the best and only candidates to become the new breeding male at Edinburgh.

    Someone at Twycross told me Argus has been tested and found to have low quality sperm. Presumably they checked him over to see if there was a reason for no breeding. However things could change in that direction if he had new partner(s).

    On the other hand, I think Valencia's set-up really isn't suitable for this species and they shouldn't be entrusted with such a rare(in zoos) species.

    I can remember when Edinburgh had about six Hamlyn's, including four females nearly all born there. They have in the past had a good breeding record with them, as your data shows.

    the situation goes from bad to worse.:(

    Bioparc Valencia were supposed to take 4 old non-breeding females from Paris(?) zoo but some of these may already have died ,either at Paris or at Bioparc.

    Bioparc received 0,4 old and non breeding females from Paris (the last two hamlyns there) and La Palmyre in 2007, a young male from Leipzig followed in 2008.

    The oldest female from Paris, already 30 years old in 2007, died immediately. One further female (maybe two females) died in 2009.

    "Kikwit" never bred, the death of "Kwanza" and "Kenge" were more fatal....

    A keeper at Leipzig told me, that "Cora" and "Kito" (one of two potential breeding pairs at the zoo) are like bosom buddies.

    According to ISIS, Twycross now hold only 1.0. Hamlyn's. Don't know if the female has died or been transferred or to where.

    From the Spanish threads, Valencia no longer have them either.

    No news if Edinburgh have a new adult male.

    According to ISIS now only 20 animals (8.12) in Europe Zoos.

    Does anyone have any ideas why so few guenon species are faring well in captivity? Is it due to inbreeding, diet, disease, bad social arrangements, a combination of all, or something else?

    I believe it is a combination of factors as you suggest, possibly differing with various species. IMO the main one is that many species are so poorly represented that the populations aren't viable, aggravated by lack of anything other than occassional breeding successes to augment the populations. Apart from Dianas, De Brazzas and probably L'Hoest's monkey, I doubt if any other species are viable longterm nowadays in our zoos.:(
