Male chimpanzee with the name Koko, who was kept in Skopje zoo, in 2009 (not in 2007, since the plan was released in 2007), was sent to rehabilitation centre in Almere (not Amsterdam, as I originaly wrote) (AAP Foundation-sanctuary), in the Netherlands, because of the severe depression he was suffering from, because he was kept solitary for many years, since his mother death (died from tuberculosis) when he was subadult.
He was born in 1996 in Skopje zoo (so he is still young, and can contribute for some future breeding if it is from particular subspecies; I don't know his subspecies or he is hybrid). But I provided a picture with the link below (but language is on macedonian). He was agressive, deppressed, doing human behavior-like things (like kissing, or even smoking I think), kept in awful conditions (with small square concrete enclosure with the size of living room) in the almost awful zoo in that time.

It was anounced on October 14, 2015 that Koko, after 6.5 years of treatment and resocialization with other chimpanzees in the Netherlands centre (first kept alone for 4 months), recovered from depression, and that will be returned to Skopje zoo, but now accompanied by several other chimpanzees (two) with whom he established strongest friendships; apparently, he showed dominance in the group.

We are still waiting for Koko and his company return from the Netherlands, but Skopje zoo had not anounced yet that new enclosure for chimpanzees is built.

I think there are yet, many chimps like Koko before 2009, who are kept solitary in Europe. Stara Zagora zoo (Bulgaria) holds chimpanzee(s), but I don't know how many?

What do you think, wich subspecies is Koko (from the picture on link below)? I would say it is a central common chimpanzee or hybrid?
