Is this exhibit a normal part of the zoo open to all zoo visitors now or do you only see the giraffes in behind-the-scenes tours still? I remember there was some controversy about that (or maybe just some negative comments by Zoochatters).

On a side note, is Australia Zoo shutting down their elephant exhibit?

This is part of the zoo. However, getting to this exhibit takes quite a bit of walking which is not comfortable on what was a really humid day! On display in the savannah exhibit are plains zebra, (hybrid) giraffe and southern white rhino. The cheetahs, however, do not have a proper exhibit so cannot be seen unless they are being taken on walks in the area. There is meant to be a second phase to Africa which will include a cheetah exhibit and lemur (walkthrough?) exhibit.

      And regarding elephants, no idea!

It is shut at the moment, according to the map/website it is under renovation. I imagine they will be keen to re-open it when possible.
