Ι am designing a new zoo and i want the exhibits to be as realistic as possible . So , i have heard about the AZA rules for each animal which say how should an animal be kept on a zoo ( for example elephants must be at least 3 in one exhibit ) and i want to know where i can see those rules ... Doues anyone know ?
Get a membership to the AZA. It costs $30 right now... sadly you probably cant wait for half price in July. Besides the care manuals the AZA offers some mixed exhibit guides, the SSPs does have some recommendations for groupings or set up if something has changed. For your purposed the manuals are probably best but you can learn from the other sources. They have just started the mixed exhibit guides and some fast reference care sheets (off the top of my head they have them at least for the TAG hippos belong to). The care manuals actually contain more info than just 19 species. The Andean Condor, Chimps, Colobus, Massassaga Rattlesnakes, Indigo Snake, bustard, lion, polar bears and Red-legged Seriema are all single species books. But the eulemur covers 9 lemur species, the large canied covers 7 species, the Mongoose ect covers 4 species, the Mustelids covers 7 species, the Procyonid covers 4 species, the otter covers 6 species, the tapir covers 2 species and the Viverrids covers 5 species. The Jellyfish actually covers all species kept but deals with them like a single species. That gives you 54 species plus a general idea on tons of other species that can live with the 54 species. I dont know if your doing it as a fun thing or a project or a real zoo but you could also try contacting the AZA to get more of the care manuals that arent online. They might sell you copies or be able to answer some questions.
