Hey all, new here. Surprised there's no discussion for the Zoo in Forest Park in Mass.

Especially with the sad news regarding the passing of two monkeys this week due to a power outage in frigid temperatures. Anyone know anything about this? Looking to learn more about the Zoo as I had heard good things.

I don't know much about the place. All I know is that they have a specific breed of donkey that I want to see. Also ferrets. I am a sucker for ferrets.

From what I hear they are discussing what to do to keep this from happening again.

They have some cool animals in general it seems. Would love to make it up there this year.

The monkey thing seemed to get a lot of backlash though, so it's hard to know what's to believe. Hopefully other locals can chime in

It's a small zoo with lots of game fence and corn cob caging. The predators are in small habitats. They have tamandua and supposedly their cougars are south anerican. It's a lot of petco and petsmart type animals, some monkeys, supposed western and eastern bobcats. They bring in baby tigers or lions for seasonal attractions. Their spotted leopard is supposed to be african. I took the kids and we were in and out in 20 minutes as I was becoming enraged with the caging. We saved the day and went to Capron Park in Attleboro. They do have a poitou donkey. Franklin Park has two poitou as well.

Caging too small or just not good?

Why do you say supposed? Are their doubts of the authenticity?

Not calling out, btw, I just don't know. Honest questions. I'd hate to support a place where the animals are treated poorly, especially after the monkey news, but I had always heard such good things

Both. The caging looked rusty and inadequate.

Well, there aren't many known pure african leopards in the U.S. South American Mountain Lions, only get mentioned from South America collections or Europe.

I don't think because the cages are meh, that the animals are treated poorly. It reminds me of Southwick's and York's minus the carney rides.

Okay that makes sense. Like I said, I'm a noob at this scene so I may ask a lot of dumb questions or misunderstand stuff early on, don't mind me.

Now, they're not AZA right? AZA is just something I'm learning about now, would they get better funding if they were? What kind of changes would they need to become it?

Is there any chance this monkey business (terrible pun for such a tragedy, i didnt even mean it, it just happened) could shut them down?

When someone says "New Red Wolf 1:1" or new turtle 0:0:2"

I know 1-1 means one male and one female (though I'm not sure if that's the order or not). Is the third spot for unknowns or?

    It's fine.

No, not AZA. I'm not 100% sure on what is needed. Itvwon't guarantee funding. Tha much I know as many AZA zoos struggle.

No, accidents happen. News blows it up as it tugs at heart strings.

1.1.1 means one male, one female and one unknown gender. Can see all sorts of combos from 1.0 to 0.1 to 0.0.1. Maybe 0.0.3 or 0.2.5. 1.0.11, etc.

Okay so it goes male-female-unknown. I figured but I wasn't sure. Thanks for the info.

Good to know the zoo isn't all bad then. The media is what it is haha.

It's weird that there isn't a section or discussion for it. I know it's smaller but still.
