Western gorilla 'Matadi'

Enjoying a baked potato during the keeper talk. Ape House, Paignton, 18th April 2015. It was announced that he is soon moving to Howletts to lead a new breeding group. 'Matadi' was born at Twycross and moved to Paignton after his father 'Sekondi' died and 'Oumbie' took his place. Three of his grandparents were wild-caught and he is genetically very important.

Great photo as always - Delighted to hear he's staying in the UK :)

He will be the first male Gorilla to join the Howletts groups from outside the Parks, since they were originally formed in the 1960/70's era. He's also only the third male they have ever got from another Zoo(the others being their very first male Kulu- from Basel, and their first breeding male Kisoro, from Lincoln Park Chicago).
