      Ciconia ciconia.

      Birds of the World demonstration.

What a sight! What other birds do they fly?
    • Pertinax
How are birds like this stork prevented from flying away? :confused:Do they use food lures as with Macaws, Vultures etc?
    • Crowthorne
It might depend on the show, there is this stork, hyacinth macaws (x2), military macaws (x2), scarlet macaws (x2 - Inca and George, flying in displays now for 20 years), blue-and-gold macaws (x2), African grey parrots (x2), a small group of whistling ducks, great grey owl (x1) and burrowing owl (x1). The stork really is an impressive sight, as are all the macaws flying at once along with the whistling ducks.

As @Crowthorne mentions, it varies from demo to demo. The one in which this stork appeared also featured African grey parrot (x1); great grey owl (x2, although I think only one flew); hyacinth, military and scarlet macaws; burrowing owl (x1), Harris hawk (x1).

I caught the tail end of a later show the same day: that one had lanner falcon (x1, with altimeter). I believe that a bald eagle is also flown.

You are correct Rob! "Apache" is flown sparingly nowadays due to age. The plan is also to eventually fly a group of 30 Whistling ducks rather than the current 6/7!

Truly impressive photos of all the birds btw! God knows how you achieved it!

I was impressed with the half-dozen I saw earlier in the year -- if they can repeat that with 30, wow!
Thanks for the kind comment! Decent equipment helps with the bird flight shots. Although I still have to point it in the right direction of course (not always easy!) :)

Have you been to Banham? I'd love to see what you could do with 5 Rueppell's Vutures soaring above you!
    • ro6ca66
No, somehow I've never been to Banham (nor any of the other Norfolk collections, come to that). Definitely on my list though - not least because of those vultures! :)
