Recently 2 Mishmi takins (Budorcas taxicolor taxicolor) arrived at the zoo, namely a male from Espace Animalier de la Haute-Touche and a female from Chomutov Zoopark. This marks the return of this species to Zoo Magdeburg, where the last and first female passed away last June.

Last Sunday female Nepalese red panda (Ailurus fulgens) Tiffany passed away due to age-related illnesses. According to ZTl Zoo Magdeburg only had one female at the end of last year, I am not sure about any new arrivals. Would this mean that Zoo Magdeburg no-longer has any red pandas?

According to ZTL, the pair of Spix's Moustached Tamarin (Saguinus mystax) have left for Jihlava Zoo in Czechia. A shame, as they were one of the zoo's greatest rarities, and that leaves just two European zoos (Jihlava and Olomouc, both in Czechia) as holders, although given Jihlava's large group and past breeding success with the species, I am sure that this move was performed with good purpose, and hopefully further breeding will occur of this exciting rarity!

The species is being phased out according to the EAZA's best practice guidelines. So I wouldn't count on any more breeding.

What's more, all animals are related. Olomouc, Jihlava and Prague (former, now in Jihlava) have pairs formed by offsprings from Magdeburg. Some of the animals then have problems with reproduction.

Last month 3-year old male South African elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) Uli was send to Noahs Ark Zoo Farm. In May female Sweni will arrive from Zoo Wuppertal.

Earlier this month the Western black crowned cranes (Balearica pavonina pavonina) got a new aviary next to the zebra enclosure.

Recently a Tanzanian Black-and-white colobus (Colobus angolensis palliatus) was born!
