Anyone know when the masterplan will be published this year? I wait with some trepidation and excitement. A major project should be the new Pachyderm House, the black rhino really deserve better accomodations and outdoor exhibitry (hey I am biased ... perhaps). I think they should also do more with their open spaces, perhaps by creating space for native wildlife habitats (leave areas in fallow state with modifications for local wildlife) and Connect them to the zoo and its wider work in in situ conservation at home and abroad. Apart from the Lake area and the Botanical Gardens parts I specifically mean the Forest Preserve and the areas across the path / road (McCormick and Brookfield Woods) Source: Brookfield current Zoo map. https://www.brookfieldzoo.org/custom.czs/files/be/beaa639a-e8f0-45bd-a514-15877309fabe.jpg
Last we’ve heard, June is when we should finally see the master plan. And I agree that the rhinos need much better space and renovations if they want to breed them for the future.
Transforming the Pachyderm House into a Savannah overlook has been discussed a few times so that is likely one of the projects closer on the horizon. By the open eras do you mean the grassy malls or something else? I'm a bit confused there.
Some of the grassy malls yes and the wider area around like the Forest Preserve on the right side of Brookfield Zoo and the Woods to the North across the path.

As a joint April Fools joke, Brookfield teased on April Fools Day introducing Rockhopper and Magellanic penguins to the Living Coast, and the Shedd Aquarium teased introducing Humboldt penguins. They immediately tagged the respective tweets as jokes and pointed to the other institution. I personally would have gone a little crazier - not enough for casual visitors to get upset but maybe enough to rile up some of us.
I definitely didn’t share the initial tweet here before the follow up and delete it super fast or anything like that…
It appears a male tree pangolin was born sometime late last year. Zootierliste lists them as having 6.6 individuals as of three months ago when they only had 5.6 according to the latest annual report released last August.
The zoo has begun running an ad on Facebook, stating the koalas will be viewable starting Memorial Day.

Oh wow, significant moment for a zoo which some on this site had stated was in decline. Wishing best of luck to the zoo.
It’s been on the up and up for the last couple years or so, but will definitely be once the master plan comes out in about a couple months.
