Took a trip to the zoo today: • Onion the Harbor Seal was a no show. • V the American Black Bear was out on exhibit. • Rocket and Jada the 2 Masai Giraffes were separated in the indoor barn which normally isn’t the case. • All 4 elephants were on exhibit. • Ant exhibit in the lower level of the rainforest was under construction including every terrarium surrounding the exhibit. • Clouded Leopard exhibit had a darker tint to the habitat, so it looked like it was supposed to resemble nighttime. • The 2 small primate habitats to the left when you walk into the rainforest had signs saying animals off exhibit. • PCA Building is closed until further notice for Gorilla troop bonding, I heard from a volunteer it could be days or possibly weeks, it’s on the Gorillas time. • Lots and Lots of joeys had their heads peaking out of their mother’s pouches, only 1 right now is fully out of the pouch and roaming around. • Got confirmation from a Tree Kangaroo Keeper that Modi has not made her public debut yet, she is very shy. • Also got confirmation from that keeper that Sausi and I believe he said Tia ( Not 100% if he said Tia) 2 tree kangaroos passed away last year. He said the 2 individuals they have now are Modi and Kirk ( who I assume is Kiari) because he called him the “Old Man”. • Also noticed on my way driving out that the outdoor primate habitats at PCA had all new climbing structures along with ropes and all that fun stuff. Question- Was there always ropes and enrichment barrels on the islands where they use to put the monkeys out during the summer?
I didn't see the colored lighting in the RainForest yesterday. I believe the barrels and such on the WFL islands are old, and I saw yesterday that they've removed the boardwalk across the lake, so I was wondering if they're planning on re-using the islands. Not sure how long they've had the boardwalk down. Glad you got to see V yesterday.
Since they removed the boardwalk across the lake, that either means the monkeys are coming back to the islands or they removed it because they Swan Boats are too tall, since I believe they will be doing Swan Boat rides this summer. Or possibly it was just getting old and they decided to tear it down.
All is so far so good with integrating baby gorilla Jameela into Cleveland’s troop. Not only is one of the females (Fredericka) showing interest, but one of the youngsters even showed interest in playing with her! Cleveland Zoo says baby gorilla Jameela is having positive interactions
I don't know if the Zoological Society announced it or not, but Twilight at the Zoo is happening on August 2nd and tickets go on sale June 1st
The zoo has posted an update on Jameela. It looks like Freddy will be her foster mother. The PC&A building will be varying if its open or closed based on the gorilla's needs.
This isn’t necessarily Cleveland Zoo News, but I felt like it should be posted here. Sadly, Nyoonbi and Mackenzie’s first joey named Maya who was born at the zoo in 2020 has passed away at the age of 4 at the Los Angeles Zoo. She became a mother at LA in 2022. Super sad to hear, I have so many great memories of her, especially since she was the 1st Koala Joey I ever saw. This was reported in the NA Koala Thread, I would give a link to an article but the death wasn’t publicly announced.
I posted it in the NA Koala thread and appreciate you also posting it in here for her Cleveland fans. LA hasn't announced her passing (they rarely ever announce animal deaths) other than noting the passing of a female koala in their monthly Animal Transactions: https://lazoo.org/wp-content/upload...sion-Animal-Transaction-Report-April-2024.pdf As I mentioned in the NA koala population thread, I did confirm the sad news with one of the Australia area keepers in LA today.
Former Cleveland resident sun bear Scruffy has passed away. She was over 48 years old! The oldest sun bear in captivity and most likely ever! This one hit me hard, I had so many great memories of her at Akron and Cleveland. Scruffy was retired to Honolulu in 2022. We will miss you Scruffy! Forever in our hearts!❤️ Information from Honolulu Zoo News thread. Log in to Facebook
That's quite a shame. I'm glad l saw her a few more times at Cleveland before she moved. Wish she had stayed in Asian Highlands like she was when construction started but it seemed Hawaii did her some good.
She wasn’t in Asian Highlands for too long. Kind of weird how she was the first bear ever in Cleveland that you could ever have glass viewing with. I always had a fun time going around the bear grottos to see if she was outside. Never saw her in the grottos once she returned from Akron. I was excited that I got to see her up and moving in Asian Highlands before she was transferred.
Correction- Scruffy has passed away at the age of 38, not 48. Still a very long life though. It was a typo by the zoo. Also found out some new information through a pdf I was reading so I figured I should post it here. -V the American Black Bear is 27 or 28 years old and was rescued from private ownership in 2006 along with her former companion Daisy. -Scruffy was rescued from the illegal pet trade in 1996. - Before the tropical bear habitats were renovated there use to be a small outdoor yard that wasn’t visible to the public. https://www.animalbehaviorandcognit...s/35/AB_C_Vol8(4)_Bernstein-Kurtycz_et_al.pdf
From Reddit- Wooly Bill is currently undergoing repairs. Honestly I think he's a little scarier when he's just a head and some metal/wires. (Not the most groundbreaking zoo news but still cool)
Went to the zoo today with my fiance and had a few things to report on: V the American Black Bear and Onion the Harbor Seal were out. Ruskin the Red Panda (the elderly one in African Savanna) was a no show. PC&A Building was closed but the Cheetah exhibit was open. Animals were in the outdoor Primate exhibits. Species were: Allen’s Swamp Monkey, Golden Bellied Mangabeys, Wolf's Guenon. Bulu the Koala was very active. Theming is starting to be removed from the ant exhibit in the RainForest. Many of the large ants and the signage was missing. Waterfowl Lake is blocked off at the birds of prey exhibits. Gharial exhibit was drained for renovation. Blue lighting was off in the Clouded Leopard exhibit. Ryker was also a no show. Also the zoo has posted a third update on Jameela
The past couple times I have gone to the zoo I have only seen 1 Gharial, has that been the case for you? I’m very curious to see what they are going to do with the ant exhibit, since it sounds like the ants are gone? I’ll make sure to look for Ruskin this Saturday!
There was a sign for a spotted turtle over one of the windows for the ants. I think I saw both Gharials in March. I'd have to go through my photos.
Fourth Jameela update - The troop is accepting her more and PC&A will be reopened, at least the top level so the guests still have distance from the Gorillas.
