Zoos have been exempt from all the bans, the regulation only calls for more work on education, conservation and research. So they can continue to keep, breed and exchange non-native animals. In practice it means that Barcelona Zoo is now doing more for conservation of native species and has stepped up their research. They are the leading Spanish mainland zoo when it comes to that, but not sure if they weren't already.

According to photos posted in the "Dierentuinen onze hobby" Facebook group a Diana monkey was born at Artis recently.

Recently a new species was put on display in the small mammal house, namely Crete spiny mice (Acomys minous) making Artis the third zoo in the world (according to ZTL) with this species!

Some sad news from my visit today, both the small clawed otter and the binturong have passed away. This makes the small mammal house even emptier..

Any clue to the cause of death, like a certain disease?

The binturong was 23 years old, which is pretty old for such an animal.

With the recent birth, there are now four. One male, two females and the young. I did hear that the other female is also pregnant, so there should soon be five.

Good news, the Green keel-bellied lizards (Gastropholis prasina) are now on show in the Reptile house!
They can be found in the first enclosure (on the left side) when you enter the "warm" part of the Reptile house from the "cold" part.

Yesterday male Asian elephant Sibu arrived from Dierenrijk.
Today he was in the small paddock (former main paddock), he has not been introduced to the rest of the herd yet.

I visited ARTIS for the first time this weekend. I was impressed of the quality of both the collection and the facilities.

One question: when I walked through the lemurs I noticed that there were no barriers. How do the animals stay in that area?

Explanation from @zooman on this photo. Artis - Lemurenland - ZooChat

In short, the bridge is electrified when the park is closed and lemurs conditioned to not touch it is the explanation offered.

Yesterday I received the new Artis member magazine, not much news to share.
However, a new species was announced, namely the Siberian weasel (Mustela sibirica).
As far as I know this species is not on show yet, but will probably be kept in the formerNorthern yellow-throated marten (Martes flavigula aterrima) enclosure. This enclosure has recently been refurbished and now also has a small pond.
