I visited Today. Here are some updates: The Bird house is closed on both floors but I took peeks inside and took pics. The Passerine enclosure has brambling, Eurasian skylark, Japanese Tit, Japanese White Eye, and Black Faced Bunting. White bellied green pigeon is not in the bird cages nor in the Japanese Birds 2. Birds next to the Shinobazu Pond are temporarily gone because of the Avian Flu. The Tundra Swan is not exhibited due to the Avian Flu. There is a Spider monkey without it's tail inside the White Faced Saki enclosure, with the saki being bts. Wild Birds I spotted Today are Oriental Turtle Dove Tree Sparrow Large Billed Crow Japanese tit Brown Eared Bulbul Daurian Redstart Great Cormorant Colony(As always) Oriental Greenfinch Black Headed Gull
How unfortunate for the Bird House being closed. Hopefully it will be open on the day I go, which will be the 12th of February
Unfortunately, I think it will be closed. The winter is aiding the avian flu, hence the reason for all the closures of Avian enclosures. I assume the bird house will reopen in Spring after the flu has calmed.
Dang. I wanted to visit the bird house for the brush turkey, tinamou and whydah. Hopefully the three are well.
There is only one Elegant Crested Tinamou left, in the aviary that also houses Pied Imperial Pigeons and Great Slaty Woodpecker.
The Bird House will reopen on February 12, which on a personal note, is conveniently on the day I visit the Ueno Zoo.
@Dr. Wolverine The construction on the pheasantry row will be done on March the 3rd. Also, the treeshrew is still listed on the zoo's website, so maybe it's off show? Do you know if the Ueno Zoo keeps species offshow or rotates species?
They certainly keep some species off show. One off-show enclosure that is somewhat visible to the public is the bird cages right below the bridge connecting the two sides of the zoo. That's where they are keeping their Tundra Swan. Also, did you check the Japanese or the English website for your source on the treeshrew? They tend to not update the English version.
The construction tarp of the pheasant house has been lifted, which means the pheasant row is reopened. The construction was done ahead of time btw.
What a shame. I remember him running around his small enclosure. I will sure miss him. @zoogeekmaelstrom another lost species of Japan.
This is a devastating loss to me. Fossa is an unique animal in zoos and to see Japan lose it is unfortunate. Either the fossa enclosure is going to become a habitat for lemurs or the zoo will get another fossa.
Ueno still is the only zoo to have pangolin, spiny mice, house shrew, aye aye, tarsier, Prevosts squirrel, treeshrew, brambling, white backed vulture, paradise whydah, Egyptian plover, brush turkey, slaty woodpecker, go-away bird, crowned hornbill, tinamou among others currently.
