I'm a little curious with this exhibit, is it one large exhibit or two smaller ones? I can't seam to work the different areas into the same exhibit also is it still within the Aquarium grounds as it were? it could still be a usable exhibit to my eyes, meshed over for birds or even primates. I know they are brutal as far as animal welfare goes, but I do have a nostalgic feel for old exhibits, of course I didn't have to live in them.
It's outside of the aquarium, it is on a trail in Stanley park. It's two separate pits but they might connect, I'm not completely sure.
This polar bear complex is not affiliated with Vancouver Aquarium but it is literally a one-minute walk from the aquatic facility and the last remnant of the Stanley Park Zoo that closed down in the late 1990's. The photo below shows the first grotto in its entirety and in the background it is just possible to see the wall of the second grotto. The two exhibits are joined by the long stone wall that can be seen and inside that wall are metal cage doors so that the bears could either be allowed access to both enclosures or else certain bears could be split up if they were not getting along. I can clearly recall visiting the zoo and seeing bears pace back and forth between the grottoes, although on other visits there would be 1-2 bears on each side and they would be separated from each other. http://www.zoochat.com/534/abandoned-polar-bear-enclosure-270806/ Here is an old photo showing one of the grottoes and all 4 polar bears that lived there: https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5469689361/
How about adaptive re-use? http://www.slate.fr/sites/default/files/photos/tumblr_lemdnrGbBH1qcj2uc.gif
The Stanley Park Zoo may have had some of the most surreal zoo exhibits ever created. Check out the combined monkey and seal exhibit (when I saw this in 1989 it was a monkey and penguin exhibit): https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8589/16278142550_e887c27994_b.jpg Funky otter exhibit: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4101/4899336466_30d5cfe582_z.jpg
Thanks for the info guys it looked so untouched my vandal hands that I thought it may be in the Aquarium grounds in most places this would be covered in "art" by now. And just when you think you have seen it all, DavidBrown posts a picture link!
wow, that otter enclosure looks very like a mini version of London's old penguin pool! I wonder if that was intentional.
