Suliman was vesectomised im pretty sure and he has to be given hormone pills so that his mane will keep on growing as just after the operation all of his mane fell out.
I think Jabir may be vesectomised as he did have a slight lack of mane however he was so easily spotted being much larger and butcher and looked alot older than other younger males with small manes.
Seeing what ive seen my guess would be Suliman and Jabir have been vesectomised.

Vasectomy should not affect mane growth. Perhaps the loss of his mane was the result of post-operative shock?

I agree its more likely they have vasectomised these males than castrated them. Castration is more drastic and would cause mane loss for life.

The babary lions are more pure than f.e. amurleopards. Some of the breedinglines at rabat are complete pure. There were testing of genes and it was said on the EAZA-meeting. So the studbook makes sense and more and more zoos want to keep them. One important thing here: They dont have inbreedingproblems like the asian lions or angolan lions (who are in fact all mix-lions... thanks to lisboa).
So please stop the 'so called' stuff ;) OR I start it on ALL ssp who are not in all breeding lines 100% pure! :D

The scientific evidence from DNA testing (of Rabat Lions) published a year or so ago would seem to indicate otherwise, that they originated from sub Saharan Africa. Unless there have been more recent tests proving otherwise?
    • Mike11
I agree with you Pertinax but I think vesectomy would be the most likely.
I dont know if the mane loss is still continuing but post-operation stress is probably very likely in this situation.

      Are u sure of that?

Do you have available the studbooks?

I hope this is just the a holding pen and not there actual enclousre!
    • Mike11
It may be a holding pen within the Enclosure.
This used to hold Siberian Tigers and it is a huge wooded enclosure. One of the largest there indeed due to its darkness it is probably more suited to the Tigers but the lions dont seem to complain. It is one of the biggest cat enclosures in the Park.
Cant really say a bad word about it!

This is nowhere near being the whole exhibit - the animals had full access to the main paddock, which is off to the right.

      Thanks for seconding that Maguari,
It is a fab enclosure, large and wooded and gives plenty of cover but I think it would be better suited for Tigers as it was originally built for. But it looks after the young Barbary Males superbly.
