Brazilian Agouti (Dasyprocta leporina)

Brazilian Agouti (Dasyprocta leporina)
    • Chlidonias
Also known as Golden-rumped or Red-rumped Agoutis.

Until 2016 the entire Australasian population was descended from four animals imported by Auckland Zoo in 1949. There has been a suggestion that that population may be a hybrid one but I'm not sure if that has been verified or refuted in any way. A photo of one of the animals of that original stock is here (at Wellington Zoo):

In May 2016 Wellington imported 1.3 new animals from Szeged Zoo (Hungary), and the animal in this current photo is one of those. The difference in appearance between the new animals and the original animals in Australasia is striking.

Indeed. The second picture actually looks like an Azara's Agouti to me.

It does look similar to Azara's doesn't it. Here's a photo by @Maguari of an Azara's at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, in the same position for comparison.
