Great viewing area, it must be awsome seeing the dogs next to the window.

The zoo has at least a dozen african wild dogs, which I think is the second most in North America. The Mountain View Conservation Centre in Langley (Canada) had exactly 32 when I visited early in 2008.

Looks like a really nice exhibit, but judging from pictures only, I think Woodland Park's wild dog exhibit does a better job of invoking the African savannah.

Didnt this enclosure house Okapi at one time?
    • Ungulate
Yes, you are correct okapikpr - for a while there were okapi on display both here and in Congo.

A ridiculous question probably, but was there glass viewing for the Okapis back then? I'll guess no...

You are correct--there was no glass. The exhibit was designed for gerenuk, but never housed them. Originally home to slender-horned gazelle, then okapis, now expanded and improved for wild dogs.

      Ok, thanks.:)

Oh, what I would give to see those gerenuks there today... Have they ever been exhibited at the Bronx before?

And what about the slender-horned gazelles? I saw them on my visit this past April, but sometimes there's nothing in the exhibit, and from videos I've seen on YouTube, n'yalas are occasionally in there... Anyone know why?
