It's a shame that this is the only zoo outside of Africa that exhibits the beautiful Imbabala. I hope to get down there before they are all gone and before the Jentink's Duiker dies...that I may not make as he is quite old :(

So with all the phasing out of species going on, what happens to them when more and more of their natural habitat is encroached upon and disappears? Do zoos then try to come to the rescue, in a last minute effort to try and exhibit them again for breeding purposes? I can't say I like or agree with the way things are being managed now.

I can remember when Los Angeles exhibited several real antelope beauties almost simultaneously; Bongo, Nyala, Bushbuck, and Zebra, Jentink's, and Yellow-backed Duikers. Late '70s through the mid 80s. Of course, this was all under then Zoo Director Dr. Warren Thomas, who previous to 1974 was at Glady's Porter Zoo, and helped to build that rare and unique collection.

I know Bushbuck are rare in zoos but v common in South Africa, so always a chance to see one there......not so easy for the duiker unfortunately......

Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus) are such an amazing antelope, I am proud to have seen them in real life at the Los Angeles Zoo, they were in the exhibit were the okapis currently are and it feels like yesterday that the Bushbuck were there, now sadly they are uncommon in zoos
