Has Taronga got one of the biggest chimp groups in captivity and, if so, how their group rates compared to the biggest group in the world?
At one time, when there was around 28 chimps in the exhibit, it was certainly one of the largest captive groups. I'm not sure what places like Apenhuel are doing now or how many chimps they have in a single group, but I'm sure there are other similar sized colonies around. Not sure what you mean by how it 'rates' to other groups?
The short answers are "No" and "No". As I don't know how big the largest groups are, I can't answer the first question, and I don't know how many Taronga currently have (there have been many changes to the group since I worked there) but there is generally a lot more females than males.
