Collared trogon

Tropical House upper level aviary, Chester, 4th December 2018

Collared trogon

Trogon collaris, male. The pair are both looking very handsome (they were a little tattered before their moult) and they seem well settled in their aviary. They sit very still on their perches slowly twisting their heads as they look around, so they can be hard to spot at first, but they will now perch in places where they can be seen and photographed, give or take the odd palm frond.

Lovely birds. Apparently they were fed something that didn't agree with them before they arrived at Chester, which, like the rings of a tree, eventually manifests itself in their feather growth and caused them to a) look scruffy as their feathers were weakened and b) moult. They do look so much better now.
