Cologne Zoo - Douc langurs

Douc langurs in the Ape House at Cologne Zoo. Cologne Zoo is the only zoo in Europe to keep this rare species. They hold 2.3 douc langurs, one of the males being a baby, born in March 2007.

      Yeah, when I wrote that comment I did not know that they were on display, but now I do.

      i met a primate researcher who studied the doucs at cologne. she said they actually did rather poorly, starved themselves in winter somewhat as they hated not having fresh leaves to eat. she also said they were inbred and that they were dying out.

      i suggested that at least some members be sent overseas, so as to contribute the genetic lineage to a zoo who would better use it. the response was

      "oh no - we love our doucs"

      I have been fortunate enough to se hem a couple of times in Cologne.Beautiful animals - I have never seen a photo which really captures their special charm.

      I took some MUCH better photos of the doucs in Cologne this summer which I will upload when I eventually get the time. They were incredibly difficult to photograph but I got some good ones

      perhaps philly, Cologne & Singapore should create an intenational breeding programme, because i feel it would be worth sending 1.1 to both cologne & philly to introduce new blood to the group.
