Causeway Safari Park, May 2007, rear of old elephant house

This shot shows the back of the old elephant pen. You can see the extension to the top of the wall, where bars have been added to contain the chimpanzees (which are now at Cefn Yr Erw).

Does this remind anyone of Jurassic Park , when the overgrown and abandoned reseve is re-visited?

Closed and derelict zoos have an atmosphere all of their own. They are strangely eery places to visit as if ghosts of animals past lurk around every corner.

Indeed, I "visited" Whitson zoo a few years back. It was strange, some cages still had labels attached and left over straw.

Did you get any photos of Whitsun Zoo? What year did it close?

I'm trying to work my old phone, there may be some pics on there. Not working ATM though, I think I got some pics of the rhesus monkey cage and that.
I do know that it started in the 50s, when the owner of the house was given to Asian black bear cubs from a local shop who used them to advertise. The zoo grew to having lions, an aquarium, reptiles, sun bears etc. I think it closed in the 80s. I emailed a guy who my aunty knew who grew up there as his nan owned the place. Apparently one of the sun bears would escape frequently and could only be tempted back to her cage with honey :) They also had a lion called Jason who went to Chipperfields after the zoo.
What I saw was two ancient cages (about 5m by 2 m), which I assume housed the lions or bears, a lot of old animal houses including straw and info signs, a lot of tanks/vivs in the house basement and a crate of Grlosch bottles!
Very interesting place to walk around, although I think it's being re-developed now so it might be more secure lol.
PS - I apologise for any spelling mistakes, tad drunk lol.

One of the saddest lot of pics i have really ever seen is the state the Glasgow Zoo is in :/
Just to think once a very good and growing collection is left as rubble, burnt to the ground by vandals, graffiti everywhere along with the odd homeless person - and it used to be a happy family day out with a happy collection of big cats, primates, reptiles etc.
Very sad and very creepy too. These places where the place that quite alot of animals where born to and died at it was and still is their home.

The saddest thing in the world is a closed down zoo, well, not unless it was a bad one. I can imagine there would be a strange atmosphere, quite a ghost filled atmosphere, I wonder if a poem or abstract story can be made written from the atmosphere at a closed down zoo! Just a thought though...
