Sunbeam Snake Chester Zoo 9 May 2001

Chester Zoo claims a first world captive breeding of the Sunbeam Snake (Xenopeltis unicolor), though I have seen a report of an unconfirmed earlier breeding in Thailand. The original pair were presented by HM Customs and they bred on several occasions. This species only produced young every two years and they were not a good exhibition species, being fossorial in nature. The group was eventually exported to Cotswold Wildlife Park, I think.

      Yes aim sure this species has been breed on several occasions in Asia, I have kept it myself in the past and breed it twice. May very well have been the first breeding in Europe, though thats hard to tell for sure consider most of them is kept by private persons.

      Sebbe, I'm sure you are right. Chester probably has only a first Europe (or even UK) breeding.

      I think Chester's went to Cotswold, but I'm not certain. ISIS is showing 3.3.2 with 1.2 in Moscow being the only ones in Europe. As Sebbe says, they seem to be widely held by private keepers.
