I watched a programme on ITV1 last night and it featured the birth of Colchester's latest pygmy hippo calf. This is the first time i have seen the enclosure and i have to say i was not impressed, 2 stables of to the side, a little area under a bridge and what seemed to be the main enclosure, no bigger than a standard lounge, with a tiny pool. Is there an outdoor area for them, far from ideal, but it seems to work for the hippos as they have bred in there 3 times.
There is an outdoor area, but it is very small and for some reason has had the pool filled in fairly recently. I think this, combined with the patas monkeys are the worst enclosures at Colchester.
i agree, i think that this enclosure and the patas monkey enclosure both need to be re-designed for both the animals and the viewers sake.
