Honey Badger

At last I managed to get a photo of the Honey Badger (Ratel) at Edinburgh Zoo. It is a male and came from Prague Zoo. At first he was very shy but know I usually see him on every visit to the Zoo.

I saw him in April. I like Ratels, they're really unusual, Just like Hornbills!!!

Ratels are great little guys. A shame, that just a few european zoos are keeping them.

Just an update that Edinburgh went out of this species earlier this year. The male pictured (Tyson) was moved to join the lone female at Howlett's.

This makes sense, Howletts has bred them in the past, but as far as I know, the last were born many years ago, and I don't know, how many honey badgers they are still keeping at Howeletts, maybe just one female ?

So this is a chance, to breed them again, and I really hope, they do !

Howlett's used to keep 1:1. They bred in the past but the male died two or three years ago leaving them with just the female. Tyson was on his own at Edinburgh and she was in the same postion at Howlett's so it was an obvious choice to move one of them and create the only pair in the UK. Even if it meant Edinburgh going out of them for the forseeable future.

I believe the Howlett's female is quite old now but hopefully they can still breed.

I hope this is not the only species of this type but all types are popular in zoos because they really are amazing creatures
