Opening June 28th 1961

This wasn't the first advert to appear advertising the coming opening of the Zoo, there were a couple of similar ones saying the date was soon to be announced and that it wasn't open for Whitsun. There was also a photo of some swans and flamingoes, with the accompanying text saying it was due to open 'next Wednesday'.

When I went on the fiftieth anniversary I did suggest the admission prices should have been the same as on opening day. It was only £26 17/- more I suppose  (£26 18/- for children). Mind you, I did half a half-price voucher so it was cheaper for me.

Is that supposed to be a koala in the tree on the left? If so, did they actually have koalas?

I don't think it's meant to be a koala, but it doesn't look like anything else either. All the other animals are readily identifiable, but that one is like some weird hybrid monster.
